Management Scholar

I am a management scholar interested in decision making and in particular, managerial foresight. Human decision-making is central to all of the social sciences, but my interests lie in the behavioral elements of decision-making as they are made rather than simply a rational prescription of what decisions should be. Naturally, decisions about the future are incredibly complicated and heavily influenced by behavioral stimuli. My current projects include the use of primary data sources from various financial statements, public disclosures, and executive transcripts, as well as data collected in field experiment settings.

My dissertation work investigates the relationship of temporal focus with the performance of firms. My dissertation, “Temporal Antecedents of Foresight: Three Empirical Essays on the Relationship Between Temporal Focus and Performance”, proceeds in three parts. Chapter 1 looks at how organizational cognition, in particular, temporal focus, is connected to strategic actions. This paper proceeds by exploring potential causes of the performative association between temporal focus and intermediate outcomes like cost reduction or revenue growth. The second chapter explores the impact of cognitive diversity on a firms' level of product uniqueness. The third chapter continues the exploration of aspirational strategies by looking at uniqueness more closely. Uniqueness is often prized as providing a competitive advantage, yet is it’s source well understood? The final chapter explores the question of whether uniqueness is chosen ex-ante, or arrived at ex-post due to competitive buffering.

My future work will continue to explore the antecedents of foresight and strategic decision making through the use of text analysis. Language continues to provide a rich window into the cognitive framework of decision makers. Additionally, I am interested in exploring experimental methods of investigating the connection between cognition and strategic decision-making. I would like to continue to develop my skills with regards to publishing in top academic journals, but also desire to explore practitioner outlets for my research findings.
